How to take care of hair extensions and make it last longer?
Whether you are new to hair extensions or have been using them for years, it’s important to know how to take care of hair extensions. With proper care, your set will last longer and maintain its vibrant look. And in order to do this, you will need to set up a hair care routine for your hair extensions and follow it closely. Read this blog post to learn more hair extensions maintenance tips.
Wash your hair extensions properly
You don’t need to wash your hair extensions as frequently as your natural hair since they don’t get exposed to the oils from your scalp. Your hair extensions will stay longer if you wash them less frequently.
You can use your best judgment to determine how frequently to wash them, but we advise washing them only when there is a significant product buildup. If you find that styling your extensions is getting more and more difficult, there probably is product build-up and they need to be washed. We advise washing them once a week (for sew-in weave) or once a month (for clip-in hair).
It’s also crucial to moisturize your hair extensions as much as you can after cleaning them. Because hair extensions don’t naturally acquire the nutrients and oils that our own hair does, it’s critical to use alcohol- and sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners to keep your set moisturized and nourished. Alcohol and sulfates deplete the hair’s natural oils, making it drier and more prone to tangling or matting.
As hair extensions are dyed in the ideal shade to complement your hair, be careful to use a gentle shampoo and conditioner that is safe for colored hair. It’s better to use the shampoo that your hairstylist has recommended for human hair extensions if you want to maintain them soft and manageable.
Don’t sleep with hair extensions
You should make sure to take out your clip-in hair extensions before going to bed. Leaving them in can harm your clips and cause them to get twisted in your hair. If you use a sew-in weave, don’t forget to wear a silk scarf or sleeping cap to keep your hair from frizzing up while you sleep.
Brushing your hair extensions gently
Always be kind while handling your hair extensions, and make sure to brush them correctly to extend their life.
First, stack all of the wefts on top of one another to bring the hair together. Then, slowly work your way up to the root of the hair while delicately brushing out the hair extensions. If you encounter a particularly troublesome knot, remove the individual weft and gently brush it through.
Also, never brush the extensions while they are damp because they are most prone to breaking at this time. Instead, brush them before washing or once they are 80% dry.
Keep heat styling to a minimum
Your hair extensions will lose their texture and look, and they will wear off more quickly as a result of frequent heat exposure. Therefore, it’s important not to overuse heating equipment when styling your hair extensions. Besides, consider using a texture spray for free-heat styling instead using heating tools.
If you use heat tools, make sure to apply heat protection spray on the hair before you turn on the power.
Store your hair extensions properly
How you store your hair extensions also affects their lifespan. If you store your set in the right way, you can save it from further damage and outside factors. Make sure to always keep your extensions in a cool, dry place away from the sun (like a closet, cabinet, or dresser drawer). When storing your extensions, make sure they are totally dry to prevent the growth of mildew and other microorganisms.
You can use hair extensions hangers, storage bags, or unused boxes to store your hair extensions. And don’t forget to comb out the set before putting your extensions away to prevent tangling.
Take care of your hair before and after swimming and working out
Wearing hair extensions does not mean you need to skip your sports activities. Yet, you must take good care of your hair before, during, and after doing sports to avoid harming them.
Wearing hair extensions while swimming:
If you go swimming with your hair extensions, check the tips below:
- Braid your hair extensions and wet your hair with clean water (no salt or chlorine) before swimming
- Apply a leave-in conditioner to your hair liberally
- Apply sunscreen again as needed throughout the day. This maintains your hair extensions tangle-free and stops them from absorbing drying chemicals.
- After you finish your swimming time, wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo, condition it, and blow dry it.
Wearing hair extensions while working out:
If you want to wear the hair while working out at the gym, avoid wearing it in tight buns or ponytails. While working out, scrunchies or invisible hairbands are a terrific way to keep your hair in place without making it too tight.
If your hair or scalp becomes damp, dry the roots with a cool blow dryer after your workout. Release your hair from the ponytail after your workout if you don’t have access to a blow dryer right away so your scalp may “breathe.”
Color your hair in the right way
Even though your human hair bundles allow you to change their color, we do not recommend you bleach or lighten the hair. If you are unsure which color to choose, we advise going with the lighter choice and having them professionally dyed a darker hue.
And above are our 7 tips on how to take care of hair extensions. Don’t forget that the better you care for your hair extensions, the more beautiful it looks and the longer it last. So, even if you don’t have much time, try to spend a few minutes taking care of your hair extensions.
